By Rita Wilkins, The Downsizing Designer™

If you’re waiting for the moment when you suddenly feel 100% certain it’s time to downsize, rightsize, or age in place, this article may save you years of second-guessing.

Because here’s the truth:

Most people never get that lightbulb moment.

What they get instead is a mixture of excitement, doubt, relief, and fear… sometimes all at the same time.

If you’re feeling that emotional mix right now, you’re not confused.
You’re in transition.

Today, I want to help you understand what that really means — and help you recognize where you might be in the downsizing decision process.

The Myth of “Knowing for Sure”

We’ve been conditioned to believe that major life decisions should come with clarity and confidence.

But life transitions — especially downsizing after 50 — rarely work that way.

They come wrapped in mixed emotions:

  • Excitement and grief
  • Relief and fear
  • Longing and resistance

When I made the decision to downsize from my 5,000-square-foot home in the country to my 867-square-foot jewel-box apartment in the city, I wasn’t calm and collected.

I was ready — but unsettled.

Excited about what I was moving toward.
Scared about what I was leaving behind.

I remember asking myself:

  • Is this fear a sign that I’m not ready?
  • Or is it proof that I am?

What I know now is this:

Fear doesn’t mean you’re making the wrong decision.
It often means you’re stepping outside your comfort zone.

I like to call it “good scared.”
Not panic. Not danger. Growth.

3 Emotional Signs You May Be Ready to Downsize (Even If You’re Not Sure)

Over the years, I’ve noticed that most women fall into one of 3 emotional readiness stages when considering downsizing, rightsizing, or aging in place.

You may recognize yourself in one — or even all three.

1. Ready — But Unsettled

This was me.

I was thinking about the benefits of a smaller home:
More freedom.
More simplicity.
More time.
Less responsibility.

And at the same time, I was asking:

  • What if I regret this?
  • What if I miss my home more than I expect?
  • What if I’m giving up too much?

Here’s what I want you to know:

When excitement and fear show up together, it’s not a warning sign.
It’s often confirmation that something meaningful is shifting.

If everything felt easy and comfortable, you probably wouldn’t be growing.

2. Curious — But Cautious

This group is larger than you might think.

They’re not saying, “I’m ready to move.”

They’re saying:

  • This house feels harder to manage than it used to.
  • I don’t want to decide yet.
  • I just feel tired.

You may not be ready to downsize — but you are ready for relief.

And that matters.

This is where something I call “downsizing by decluttering” becomes powerful.

It’s not a final decision.
It’s an experiment.

You pretend you’re moving.
You sort.
You declutter.
You let go.

Not because you’ve committed to selling your home — but because you’re creating breathing room.

Clarity often comes after action.
Not before it.

3. Not Yet — And That’s Okay

Some people are waiting for certainty — that moment when everything feels obvious and easy.

But if you’re waiting to feel 100% confident before downsizing, you may be waiting a very long time.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing.
It means you’re human.

The goal isn’t to rush yourself.

The goal is to stay honest about what’s changing — inside you and around you.

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

If you’re quietly thinking, “This is exactly where I am,” I want you to know something:

You don’t have to navigate this decision by yourself.

I’ve created a Letting Go Workbook along with a free Companion Guide to help you think through your next chapter at your own pace — without pressure, without deadlines.

Sometimes the first step isn’t moving.
It’s gaining clarity.

Readiness Is a Process, Not a Deadline

Downsizing, rightsizing, or aging in place isn’t about doing what others expect.

It’s about listening to:

  • Your energy
  • Your wants and needs
  • Your current stage of life

The house that once fit your life beautifully may no longer fit the life you’re living now.

Noticing that isn’t loss.

It’s awareness.

And awareness is the beginning of wise decisions.

Wherever You Are, You’re Exactly Where You Need to Be

  • Ready but unsettled
  • Curious but cautious
  • Not ready yet — but thinking about it more often

You don’t have to rush clarity.

If you’d like support from others navigating similar questions about downsizing, rightsizing, or aging in place, I invite you to join my Simplicity Circle membership group.

It’s a space for thoughtful transitions — not rushed ones.

Because readiness doesn’t arrive all at once.

It unfolds.

And if you’re comfortable, I’d love to hear from you:

Where do you feel you are right now?

Ready but unsettled?
Curious but cautious?
Not quite there yet?

Your honesty may help someone else feel less alone.
