By Rita Wilkins, The Downsizing Designer™
Empty nest transitions, identity shifts, and designing life after kids leave home.
Several years ago, when I officially became an empty nester, I remember standing in my living room and realizing something significant had shifted.
My two sons were grown and starting their own lives as young adults.
The house was quieter.
Not sad. Not empty. Just open.
And in that openness, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.
Freedom.
For the first time in a very long time, I wasn’t reacting to someone else’s needs. I wasn’t managing schedules, solving problems, or pushing myself through the day just to keep everything moving. I was simply standing there… wondering.
What kind of music do I enjoy now?
What shows do I actually like to watch?
Simple questions—yet they stopped me in my tracks. I honestly didn’t know the answers.
I realized I had spent years choosing what worked for everyone else.
The Strange Freedom of the Empty Nest
If you’re an empty nester, you may recognize this feeling.
The freedom to choose what you want, what you like, and how you spend your time can feel both exhilarating and unfamiliar all at once.
It’s a season filled with contrast:
Pride in what was.
Curiosity about what comes next.
As a single mother and business owner, I built a life that worked.
Nothing mattered more to me than raising my boys to become healthy, loving, capable adults—while also growing a successful interior design business that supported our family. Together, we navigated challenges, celebrated milestones, and weathered many seasons of change.
And then one day, they were launched.
Standing in that quiet space, I felt a deep surge of pride for a job well done. I also realized something else, just as clearly: that chapter of my life was complete.
And now, it was time to create a new one.
Designing Life After the Kids Leave Home
As a designer, the moment felt familiar.
It reminded me of the beginning of a new project.
The space is empty. Ideas begin forming. Possibilities unfold one by one.
That’s exactly what the quiet felt like that day.
Not a loss—but a blank page.
I began to see my life the same way I see an empty room: ready to be imagined.
Choosing Intention Over Reaction
Something subtle but powerful shifted.
The questions I asked myself began to change.
What energizes me?
What lights me up?
What do I want more of? Less of?
What am I ready to release?
This was the moment I turned toward living with intention.
I started observing instead of rushing. Listening instead of filling the silence. Paying attention to what I wanted and what I needed. And I discovered something important: once you give yourself permission to grow, your thinking expands with you.
This Is Where the Next Chapter Begins
If your house is getting quieter too, hear this:
You’re entering this chapter with more wisdom than ever before.
It’s more intentional.
And it’s the perfect place to begin designing a life you truly love—because now, you get to choose.
Clarity Takes Time (And That’s Okay)
Clarity doesn’t arrive all at once.
It comes through trying new things, staying open, and learning what works for who you are now.
That’s something I wish every woman knew.
You don’t need the entire plan.
You don’t need to see the whole picture.
You simply need to give yourself permission to begin.
That alone is a powerful place to stand.
Just like the start of a new project, this season is a clean slate. Be open to new ideas. The possibilities are endless—and that’s exciting.
Think of yourself as the client.
This is your life to design.
What’s next?
What do you imagine your life looking like one year from now?
If you’re navigating the quiet of the empty nest and beginning to wonder what comes next, my bestselling book Downsize Your Life, Upgrade Your Lifestyle offers both practical guidance and emotional clarity to help you design a life that fits who you are now.
