It all began with a trip to Africa. Standing in a remote village, surrounded by people who had so little in terms of material possessions but radiated with joy and generosity, I had a revelation. These villagers didn’t have sprawling homes or closets filled with clothes, yet they were rich in what truly mattered: connection, gratitude, and a sense of purpose. Returning home to my 5,000-square-foot house filled with “things,” I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had been living a life out of alignment with my values. That trip changed everything.
For years, I lived in a large, beautiful home filled with valuable possessions I had accumulated over decades. On the outside, it looked like a picture of success, but on the inside, I often felt overwhelmed and stuck. My home, though lovely, had become a reflection of the clutter in my mind and the weight on my shoulders.
I remember one moment vividly: I was walking into my dining room, a space that could host 12 guests comfortably, but rarely did. As I looked around at the pristine table, polished china, and cabinets filled with unused crystal, I thought, Why do I have all of this when it brings me so little joy? It was then that I knew something had to change.
Three Life-Changing Moments That Decluttering Gave Me
- Freedom to Travel Lightly: After downsizing from that large house to an 867-square-foot apartment, I realized how freeing it was to own less. No longer weighed down by the responsibility of maintaining a big house or endless possessions, I had more time and energy to pursue my dreams, including traveling to places I had always longed to visit.
- Rediscovering Relationships: Letting go of physical clutter also helped me prioritize my relationships. With fewer distractions, I could spend meaningful time with loved ones, whether it was a spontaneous lunch with a friend or a long walk with my son. The connections felt deeper, more present, and more fulfilling.
- Clarity in My Purpose: The process of decluttering wasn’t just about letting go of stuff. It was about rediscovering who I was and what I wanted my life to stand for. Downsizing made room—both physically and emotionally—for me to focus on the things that truly mattered: writing my book, delivering impactful talks, and mentoring others on their journeys toward simplicity.
Why Decluttering is About More Than Stuff
Decluttering is not just about clearing out closets or donating old furniture. It’s about creating space—for peace, for joy, and for the life you truly want to live. When you let go of things that no longer serve you, you make room for what does. Imagine waking up to a home that feels calm and inviting, where every item has a purpose and every space brings you joy.
How to Start Your Decluttering Journey
If the thought of decluttering feels overwhelming, start small. Begin with one drawer or one shelf. Ask yourself, Does this item bring me joy? Is it helping me live the life I want? If the answer is no, let it go. Celebrate each small victory, and before you know it, those small steps will lead to big changes.
For example, when I tackled my own closet, I was amazed at how many clothes I had that I never wore. Letting go of those items freed up physical space—it also freed up mental space. I no longer felt the guilt of keeping things I didn’t use or need.
