With summer coming to an end in just a few short weeks, many of us are thinking about getting back on track with our decluttering projects that we started earlier in the year.

Rather than thinking of it as an overwhelming task, try taking on the mindset of accomplishing your decluttering tasks over a few weekly projects. It’s not only more manageable, but it is also more motivating to see just how much you can get done within a few short weeks.

Getting Started:

Set aside time each week to declutter one specific area of your home.

You may know exactly which area you want to start on because every time you walk by it, you can literally feel the stress.

  • It could be your closet because it’s packed with clothes that you don’t wear or clothes that are out of season.
  • It could be your kitchen pantry because every time you go to look for something to cook with, you have to dig behind everything else because it’s so disorganized.
  • It could be that one corner in your office or your bedroom. Yes, that corner—the one where you keep piling stuff up, telling yourself you’ll get to it someday.

When you have a weekly decluttering routine, you simply set a specific time aside each week to declutter one of those areas that bothers you the most and could make the biggest difference to your overall peace of mind once it’s finally addressed.

Identify High-Impact Areas:

Next, identify four areas (one each week for the next month) that, when clutter-free, would have a huge impact on how you feel about that space.

For example:

  • Your Closet: You can finally find the clothing you want to wear, and you can get dressed faster with no stress.
  • Your Pantry: Cooking is easier, and it’s much more fun when you know what’s inside your pantry.
  • That Corner: Once that corner of your office or bedroom is finally cleaned out, you can actually think better. It might even put a smile on your face.

Set Specific Goals:

Set specific goals for that one area:

  • Closet:
    • Remove any clothes that are out of season, don’t fit, or that you don’t wear.
    • Create a system for allowing in only what you love and will wear.
  • Pantry:
    • Remove all expired foods and foods you don’t use or that you or your family don’t like.
    • Create a simple system for buying only what you need and will use.

The Last Step:

The following week, move on to the next area that you selected and follow the same steps.

This week-by-week plan is a solution that actually works because it’s manageable and less overwhelming. It’s consistent.

When you set time aside each week to declutter and when you have a plan that works for you, you see results.

When you see results, it motivates you to continue.

Decluttering doesn’t have to be an insurmountable challenge. By breaking it down into manageable weekly tasks, you can transform your living space and create a more peaceful, organized environment. This 30-day strategy not only helps you tackle clutter effectively but also builds habits that will keep your home tidy in the long run. Start today, and you’ll soon enjoy the benefits of a clutter-free life. Remember, every small step you take brings you closer to a more serene and intentional living space.
