I downsized again!

Who would want to waste a beautiful, sunny day cleaning out a storage day unit?  I did… and I would highly recommend it to others.

It’s been 3 years since I moved from my big house to my tiny apartment in the city. At that time I gave away 95% of my possessions to people who needed or wanted them, but there were certain items I just wasn’t ready to part with.  So I put them in a climate controlled storage unit.  Like millions of Americans, I paid exorbitant amounts of money to store my extra stuff… contributing to a multi-billion dollar storage industry.

For 3 years I procrastinated, and I admit I was stuck.  I promised myself I would deal with it “someday.”  In the meanwhile, I was feeling annoyed that I was wasting a ridiculous amount of money, and frankly, I was overwhelmed at the thought of downsizing again.  Finally, a month ago I challenged myself to deal with my stuff, emptying the storage unit by December 31 2019 so I wouldn’t have to go into the new year feeling burdened by my extra stuff.

Motivated to at last accomplish a project that had been weighing me down I accomplished my mission, I disbursed my stuff to various charities and to my own apartment.  Excited to be finally facing what I had been putting off for several years, I didn’t expect that I would be crying over several of the items that I discovered.  One of which was a crystal bowl that our mom made our favorite dessert in at Christmas time.  I kept that bowl so I can continue that tradition with my new grand-daughter and also be able to share the legacy my mother created each time I use it.

I was so glad to have the emotional support of my daughter-in-law, who simply by being there helped me push through the emotions of downsizing.  In these past few years I’ve experienced the freedom that comes with owning less in many ways, but nothing has been as freeing than having the peace of mind of knowing I don’t have this ridiculous expense weighing over me any longer.

Is one of your new years resolutions to downsize your storage unit or to organize and declutter your stuff?  If so, I would love to hear from you.

Live the life you love… by design,

Rita

P.S. I guess I can now say that I’ve downsized by 96%!
