How to Make a New House YOUR Home

By Rita Wilkins The Downsizing Designer Have you recently moved into a new house and it still doesn’t feel like home? Or  Maybe you bought a house someone else used to live in and you were having a hard time making it feel like your own home. This is not unusual. I’ve heard it many times over the years as a designer, so I want to address it and make a few suggestions that will make you feel at home in your own home. I’m not only addressing this as an Interior Designer, but also from the standpoint of someone who has recently moved myself, so I understand the importance of making your new house “YOURS”. Perhaps some of this was also influenced by the fact that growing up, our family moved 9 different times and I always marveled at the fact that my mother was always able to make each of our houses a “home”. As I look back on that experience, I realize what she did was much of what I am sharing with you now. Once you have moved in and unpacked most of your boxes, take time to focus on one room that would make the [...]

By Rita Wilkins The Downsizing Designer As I was preparing to write this blog, I originally thought I might have 3 good reasons why many baby boomers might fail at decluttering, but the more I started to think about it, there are many more than just 3. But before you jump in… again… Wouldn’t it be helpful to understand the reasons… ·        Why you were not successful decluttering and organizing in the past? ·        Why you never finish decluttering so you could get organized? ·        What it was that held you back? Once you answer these questions, you can avoid the same mistakes and set yourself up for success so you can finally succeed at decluttering and getting organized in 2022.   #1 Reason: Not having a decluttering and organizing [...]

5 Tips: How to Get Your Spouse on Board When Decluttering Your Home

By Rita Wilkins The Downsizing Designer Have you ever found yourself saying… “It’s so much easier to declutter and get organized when my spouse is not around.” Or “He doesn’t really help, he just complains or gets in my way” As the Downsizing Designer, I can’t tell you how often I hear these kinds of comments because decluttering is an emotional conversation. So, I often respond by saying, “Wouldn’t it be great if you could find ways to take on that big project together?” …. Not only to lighten the load and get a lot more done but in the end, you both reap the rewards of combining your efforts so that your home is: Less cluttered More organized More peaceful And in the process of decluttering and organizing together, you learn a lot about each other. Why you hold onto certain things. Why it’s hard to let go of specific things. And why you accumulated so much in the first place. Understanding the reasons, you hold onto things will ultimately allow you to make lasting changes so that you don’t continue to accumulate more in the future. I will tell you though, that I do get pushback when I [...]

A Checklist for Finding The “Right Size” Home

By Rita Wilkins The Downsizing Designer Not all baby boomers are downsizing. That might sound funny coming from me, the Downsizing Designer, but what is happening is that baby boomers are trying to figure out what the “right size” house is for them at this stage of their lives. After all, lives change, people change, and lifestyles change. Once the kids move out of the house, your life and lifestyle changes. You suddenly have more time and freedom. You start to ask yourself: If you really need all of the space in your big home. If you want to spend your weekends taking care of the big yard. If it’s time to start doing some of the things you put off i.e., travel, golf, time with grandkids and etc. And yet, you’re also pulled in another direction… What about when the kids come home for the holidays? Won’t they need to have their own room again? Perhaps you do need a guestroom or two for when the kids come home or when you have overnight guests, but you start to ask, “Do you really need four bedrooms or could you make do with two or three?” These are just a [...]
